2001: A Space Odyssey

The movie starts in an era which can be called “Dawn of Man”, where some hominids come across a mysterious dark alien. Also, a hominid is shown inventing the very first weapon, bone, for killing the prey. However, as the hominid tosses the bone in the air, the movie cuts to 21st century in a ship hovering over the Earth. Dr. Heywood Floyd (William Sylvester) is a scientist and is heading towards the moon in order to inspect a newly discovered object on the moon. The object is a black monolith that emits a deafening sound when sunrays fall on it. The sound is so loud that even scientist’s headphones aren’t even able to nullify it stopping the scientists on their path.

Now jumping 18 months ahead, two astronauts Frank Pool (Gary Lockwood) and David Bowman (Keir Dullea) are heading towards Jupiter on Discovery spaceship. There are three more astronauts in hibernation and a HAL 9000 computer along with them. However, the robot malfunctions and tries to kill the astronauts in order to cover his major error. However, it is soon taken down by Bowman and he is also informed about the purpose of the voyage via a recoding, Bowman journeys to “Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite”, from Floyd. The movie also has a major plot twist in the end that is definitely going to blow up your mind.

Blade Runner

Blade Runner is kind a sci-fi thriller masterpiece which was initially released in 1982, but at that time, the movie was a failed at box office. However, a director’s cut was launched in the year 1992 with some additional sequences which immensely increased the movie’s stature. The movie starts with Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who is a retired policeman in Los Angeles. The year is 2019 and there are flying cars, lots of pollution everywhere. One among all these advanced things are ‘replicants’. ‘Replicants’ are nothing but human look-a-like android that have very short life and are manufactured by Tyrell Corporation. These replicants are stronger than normal human beings and are made for use in off-world colonization situation. In the police department, Deckard used to work as Blade Runner, name for those detectives that hunt and kill rogue replicants. Some of the replicants escape the custody and are headed to finish the earth. They are led by Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer). Deckard is therefore called by his one-time superior (M. Emmett Walsh) to come back to duty. He meets Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel), the owner of the replicant manufacturing company and then find and kills one of the escaped replicants called Zhora (Joanna Cassidy). Another replicant named Leon attacks him and is about to kill him when he is saved by Rachel (Brion James), Eldon’s assistant and a replicant but not doesn’t know about it. On the other hand, the left over two replicants target to murder Tyrell. However, Deckard tracks them with his investigation and confronts them in a violent combat. The revised Director’s cut released in 1992, does not have the narration from Deckard, but is replaced by a dream sequence which brings a twist that will give a whole new meaning to the movie.

Predestination

Predestination is a recent sci-fi film that is really incredible and let us warn you, it will really mess up your mind. It is really hard to summarize the movie without revealing the main twist the movie is based upon. But we are going to try our best. The movie begins with a time travelling agent fighting to disarm a bomb but fails. It burst in front of his eyes, destroying his face. However, someone takes the agent’s time traveling device and leaves him in a hospital.

The agent now goes to Ney York and starts a conversation with a person acting as a bar tender. The bartender tells his life story and then asks the person his. She tells that she was an orphan named “Jane” and grew up in an orphanage. She excelled in her studies and when she grew up she applied in a program called “Space Corp”, however was disqualified due to some medical condition she didn’t knew she suffered from. Later she met a man who was waiting for someone. They both fell in love but later he leaves Jane too. “Space Corp” again approaches Jane and wishes to recruit her but they stop contacting her when they discover that Jane is pregnant. Later during Caesarean section, doctors discover that Jane is intersex. Due to complication in delivery, the doctors remove Jane’s female parts and she had to now live as a man. She changes her name to “John” and now he is living as “The Unmarried Mother” as the title of the book he is writing.

Now the agent takes John back to the time when the man left her so that she can kill her and take her revenge. However, John discovers a lot of things on his journey back in time with the biggest twist in the end. The movie has been written and directed by The Spierig Brothers and is based on a short story “All You Zombies” written by Robert A. Heinlein in 1959. It is said one of the best intellectual movies as well where the story play games with your mind as well..

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is a great, touching sci-fi movie directed by Michel Gondry starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Joel Barish (Jim Carey) meets a girl Clementine (Kate Winslet) in a train. However, later in the movie, Barish discovers that Clementine has got him erased from her memory with the help of Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson) via an experimental procedure. In order to take revenge, Joel does the same and get Clementine erased from his memory as well. As the experimental procedure progresses, Joel tries to save the memories of her and Clementine from getting erased. Later what happens is really touching and incredible. Children of Men

Reluctantly, a disillusioned British bureaucrat takes up the task of brining the humankind’s last hope out from the harm and danger into care of a secret and mysterious organization which is known as “The Human Project”. The movie is based on a novel written by P.D. James in 1992 and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Caine and Charlie Hunnam.
